What GC setup do I need for alcohol analysis in a brewery?

 

The short answer is a 200 Series GC configured with a Flame Ionisation Detector (FID). This covers the majority of analytical work a brewery needs from a gas chromatograph.

What you can measure

A single 200 Series GC with FID handles ABV verification, flavour profiling, and VDK (diacetyl) testing. These are the three most common reasons breweries invest in gas chromatography.

ABV testing measures ethanol directly, giving you a precise alcohol-by-volume reading. This works for standard-strength beers and ciders as well as alcohol-free products below 0.5% ABV, where accuracy at trace levels matters most.

Flavour profiling separates and quantifies the volatile aroma compounds that define how a beer tastes. Monitoring these across batches tells you whether your process is producing consistent results or whether something has shifted.

VDK testing measures diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione. These compounds affect flavour and stability if they are not properly managed during fermentation and conditioning. Monitoring VDK levels helps you decide when a batch is ready to package.

Why the 200 Series suits smaller operations

The 200 Series weighs 7.5 kg and has a footprint of 41 x 34 cm. It fits on a standard bench in a production area or small lab without requiring dedicated infrastructure. It was designed to be straightforward to operate, which matters in environments where the person running the GC is also doing other jobs.

It runs standard capillary columns and established methods, so setting up for alcohol analysis does not require developing a method from scratch. Application notes with method details are available for each of the analyses listed above.

Do you also need NDMA testing?

If you are testing malt or raw materials for NDMA (a nitrosamine that can form during certain malting processes), the FID cannot do this. NDMA detection requires a TEA. This would be a separate instrument configured with the 800 Series TEA, or an ATNA for total nitrosamine screening.

Sample introduction

For manual injection, the standard split/splitless injector is sufficient. For automated runs or larger batch sizes, Ellutia headspace autosamplers (EL2000H or EL2100H) automate the sample introduction and allow unattended operation.
