How do I analyse a ThermoSorb-N sample?

After sampling, the collected nitrosamines need to be extracted from the cartridge and analysed. The process is straightforward.

Extraction

A solvent back-flushing technique is used to elute the sample from the ThermoSorb-N cartridge. The solvent passes through the sorbent bed in reverse, carrying the collected nitrosamines into a collection vial.

Analysis

The eluate is analysed by gas chromatography using the Ellutia 800 Series TEA. The TEA responds only to N-nitroso compounds and ignores everything else in the eluate, which means complex sample matrices do not cause interference. Analysis of volatile N-nitroso compounds at part-per-billion levels takes minutes.

For laboratories that also need a total nitrosamine value without compound separation, the ATNA automates the full screening workflow.

Sending samples for analysis

If you do not have GC-TEA capability in-house, the sealed ThermoSorb-N cartridge can be posted to a laboratory for analysis. The opaque housing and sealing caps protect the sample during transport, and the solid sorbent construction means there is no risk of spillage. Replace the sealing caps after sampling, place the cartridge back in the foil pouch, reseal, and post.
