What does the ECD wipe test involve?
If your gas chromatograph uses an Electron Capture Detector, the detector contains a Ni-63 radioactive source. Wipe testing checks the external surface of the detector for radioactive contamination. In most countries, it is a legal requirement.
How often is wipe testing required?
Testing is required at first installation and periodically after that. The interval is typically every one to three years, though national legislation or your internal company policy may set a shorter interval. If you are unsure when your detector was last tested, the safest course is to test it now.
How the Ellutia wipe test kit works
Order a kit from the Ellutia store. Each kit covers one detector and contains swabs, vials, printed instructions, and return details. No specialist equipment is needed.
Perform the wipe following the instructions in the kit. Swabbing takes a few minutes. Pack the collected samples and return them to Ellutia using the details provided.
Ellutia analyses the samples at our registered laboratory in Ely. We are qualified to handle and analyse radioactive materials in line with UK radiation safety regulations.
What you receive
Every analysis produces a detailed, signed report. Keep it for your records and submit it to the relevant regulatory authority as required.
If contamination is detected, Ellutia contacts you immediately with guidance on the appropriate next steps. You will not be left to work out the response on your own.
Multiple detectors
If you have more than one ECD on site, you need one kit per detector. Each kit is a single detector analysis.
What if the detector is no longer in use?
If your ECD is out of service, wipe testing is not the right step. Holding a Ni-63 source without the correct licence is not permitted, even temporarily.
